How long have you been breeding horses and what
prompted you to get into the breeding business?
We've been breeding for approx 15 years. We went to
a farm to buy a seasoned show horse for my daughter
and they had coming yearlings out beside the barn.
I got involved with them and offered to help when
breeding and foaling season started. After much
thought and consideration, we decided to breed a few
of our own mares. Being an all or nothing person,
the rest is history!
What do you look for when purchasing a broodmare?
The
first thing is disposition...if that's not there, I
don't want them. Next is conformation...I want a
nice short back, long underline, good hip, long
neck....a good balanced mare. I'd like to see a
produce record although that won't hold me back if
the disposition, conformation and bloodlines are
there. I have 3 mares right now that had no show or
produce record and their first babies were Top 10
World Champions....Zipped It Up, Competent Chip and
Zippos Lovely Lady. You look, you get a feel and
then you cross your fingers! There are many show
horses that never make broodmares and many
broodmares that didn't make it in the show pen for
one reason or another.

Do you have any secrets to success for us?
First and foremost is honesty. You also have to
really love the animals and care for them to the
very best of your ability. Both of these things
shine thru....no matter what.
Who is you favorite horse you have bred and why?
.
There are several....I can't name
just one. Each horse has special things that
grab your heart and never let go.
Do you feel that stud fees, breeding fees,
chute fees, collection fees and other fees
have gotten out of control?
YES!! We are trying hard to keep our fees
reasonable...ie chute fee included in
breeding fee, first collection free, special
consideration given to proven mares,
multiple mares, etc. For many years, I Was
the mare owner....I bred everything to
outside stallions..and I'll never forget
budgeting those fees and figuring what it
was going to cost to ship, or pick up, etc.
The stallion owners were very good to me and
I'm trying to pass that along.

What stallion service auctions do you
participate in as either a stallion owner or
a mare owner or both?
Incentive Fund, Breeders Trust, NSBA, Tom
Powers and NSBA Breeders Championship
Futurity. I'm willing to put the boys in
other SSA's if people request it.
What is the best way to promote your foal
crops?
Word of mouth, Quarter Horse Journal,
Internet....
What futurities/programs are the best
place to get recognition as a breeder? Incentive
Fund, NSBA, Breeders Trust

What has been your most thrilling moment as a
breeder?
What has been your most thrilling moment as a
breeder? When Ziprageous won the 2000 World
Championship 2 yr old Western Pleasure under all 5
judges!
Do you feel that shipped semen has caused an
overpopulation of young stock for sale?
. Yes,
I do. In some ways it's been wonderful....no
hauling your mare for hours with a baby on her or 30
days before she foals to the breeding farm. But in
another way, it's hard for the stallion
owner/breeding manager to help you in your decision
on whether that cross would be a wise decision with
the ultimate outcome being what you're looking for. |

How do you feel about embryo transfers and do you
feel that they are adding to the overpopulation of
foals ?
I do not
participate in any embryo transfers at this time. It
isn't out of the question if I have a good mare that
can't carry a foal to term, or if there are
extenuating circumstances.
Do you feel that cloned horses should eventually be
allowed to be registered?
No.
If you could clone one horse, who would it be?
I wouldn't.
What
changes, if any, do you think would benefit
breeders?
If everyone would take the time to think about what
the result will be when they cross a mare and a
stallion....not just pick the current popular "name
brand". Not all stallions cross on all
mares....look at the conformation of both, pick out
what you need to change on your mare to improve the
breed. Do your homework and see what stallions out
there have those strengths. Look at their offspring
and see what their strengths are.
